Thomas Spencer Forsaith1
(1814 - 1898)
Father* | Samuel Forsaith1 b. 1776, d. 1832 |
Mother* | Elizabeth Emberson1 b. 1782, d. 1844 |
Thomas Spencer Forsaith was born in London, Middlesex, on 18 July 1814.2,3,1,4 and was baptised on 16 September 1814 at St Lukes Independent Tabernacle in Finsbury.3,4,5
He married Elizabeth Mary Clements, daughter of Robert Clements and Mary (---?---), at Congregational Church, Broad St in Hoxton, East London, Middlesex, on 17 May 1838.3,1,6
He and his wife Elizabeth left Plymouth on the 14 June 1838 in the ship Coromandel and arrived in Sydney on the 2 October before continuing on to New Zealand.7
By 1847 he had moved to Auckland and established a successful drapery and manchester shop in the heart of the growing town.
He and his wife Elizabeth arrived in Melbourne on the Pioneer from New Zealand in March 1856 accompanied by their child Charlotte.8
Thomas was present at the wedding of Samuel Ludbrook Clarke and Mary Lee (Hannah) Christopher at 'Brick House', Queen St (home of the bride's mother) in Auckland on 30 June 1857.9,10,11,12,13
He signed the register at Thomas Morell Macdonald and Charlotte Clements Forsaith's wedding at the Forsaith residence, Khyber Pass Rd in Auckland on 7 January 1862.14,15,16,17,18
He and his wife Elizabeth arrived in Melbourne on the Otago from New Zealand in March 1867.19
Forsaith began to hold services in the old School of Arts in Parramatta, but land for the erection of a church was purchased in 1871 and the foundation stone laid in May. A year later the church was opened (19 May 1872).20
He and his wife Elizabeth left Melbourne on the Claud Hamilton in November 1873, bound for New Zealand.21
He acquired 'Morton House' in Melville St, Parramatta in 1874 and it remained his principal residence until his death. Morton House was originally built by architect/builder James Harrison for John Morton Gould. The lot was auctioned in 1855, and probably bought by Gould at that time. The house was sold to Forsaith in 1874 (see auction notice in Sydney Morning Herald 7 April 1874), who added the chapel, but built it on inferior foundations. The house passed to Macarthur and then to Kings' School under the name Macarthur House. It was bought by Richard Pike in 1965 after lying vacant for some years. The site of the original cellar (supposedly extensive) is not known, as Harrison's original drawings were destroyed in a 'cleanup' according to Mr Pike, when interviewed in December1990.22,20
Walter Forsaith Lawry and Marguerite Elizabeth Simpson were married by Thomas Spencer Forsaith at the residence of the bride's parents in Nth Shore, Sydney, New South Wales, on 24 February 1880.23,24,25,26
He and his wife Elizabeth left Melbourne for New Zealand in March 1882 on the Rotomahana.27
He and his wife Elizabeth returned to Melbourne in April 1884 on the Berengaria from the UK.28
He was named executor and beneficiary in the will of Elizabeth Mary Clements dated 27 June 1895 in Parramatta, New South Wales.29
He signed a will dated 13 June 1898 in Parramatta, New South Wales, a long and rambling document of some 17 foolscap pages (plus a 2-page codicil of 12 Nov 1898), in which he went to some length to request the publication of his 'memoirs'. All but the first 12 volumes of this hand-written biography are in the National Library, Canberra, but the whereabouts of the missing volumes is unclear, although they were all willed to his nephew Walter Forsaith LAWRY. It is possible they may have been sent to London for his printing relatives to supply a publication quote, but this is supposition. The will also requested busts of himself and his wife to be erected in the Congregational Church, Parramatta, but this also failed to occur (possibly due to the onerous conditions he imposed on the church for compliance). His bust later turned up in a house in Conon St, Invercargill, previously occupied by his grand-daughter, Mrs Quinn (reported in the Southland Times).30
Thomas died on 29 November 1898 in Parramatta, New South Wales, at age 84.2,1,31 He was buried on 1 December 1898 at the Rookwood Cemetery in Rookwood.2,32,33
Thomas's will was probated in Sydney, New South Wales, on 22 December 1898 Walter LAWRY renounced probate (despite the codicil to the will specifically adding him as executor) and a fourth named executor (David Stuart WALKER) while not a family member, was probably the family accountant.34
