Samuel Forsaith
(c 1702 - 1751)
Samuel Forsaith was born in England circa 1702.1,2
He married Elizabeth Willoughby, daughter of John Willoughby and Mary (---?---), in Bloxholm, Lincolnshire, on 12 May 1743.3,4
He signed a will dated 19 June 1751 in Bloxholm, Lincolnshire, appointing his wife sole executix, with the main beneficiaries being his children, his mother-in-law and his sister and brother-in-law. Strangely, although one Benjamin KIPPIS, elder of Sutterton and 'friend and cousin' was not appointed executor, he was asked to "aid and assist my wife in the execution of this will", for which he was also bequeathed £5.5
It remains unclear as to exactly how the '6 cottages or tenements' referred to in his will came into his possession - possibly purely as an investment, which would imply some wealth attributing to Samuel at this stage.
At the Court Baron held on 1 May 1735 it was recorded that on 23 June 1733 John PLUCKINGTON surrendered two cottages in the occupation of Edward HANCOCK, afterwards divided into three and then four, in the occupation of Wm LAWRENCE, Robert BRADSHAW, Robert JORDAN and Wm PURDY, to Samuel Forsaith and the records indicate he was actually present. (LR 3/42)
The ownership of these cottages can be followed through in the Manor Books to the Deed of Enfranchisement, with an accompanying plan which enables the cottages to be identified as a terrace still in existence at 46-54 Station Road and known colloquially as ‘Barrack Row’, although the name does not appear to have been derived from any connection with any barracks. The number of houses is now only five, although it is not known how the sixth disappeared. The current houses are three-storeyed but the actual age of the existing structures is unclear - they do not appear to be what would have been called 'cottages' in the 1750's.
It seems unlikely that Samuel was ever a resident of Hampton or Hampton Court, as his name does not appear in the Churchwarden’s Accounts or Rate Assessment lists.6 He was buried on 10 July 1751 at the St Mary's churchyard in Bloxholm. Bloxholm is in the Deanery of Lafford, Digby group, and the parish church is Bloxholm St Mary.7,8
Samuel died on 10 July 1751 in Bloxholm, Lincolnshire.3
His will was probated in Lincolnshire on 6 August 1751 with Elizabeth Willoughby appointed executor.5

Samuel Smyth Forsaith1
(1803 - 1894)
Father* | Samuel Forsaith1 b. 1776, d. 1832 |
Mother* | Elizabeth Smyth b. 1771, d. 1809 |
Samuel Smyth Forsaith was born in London, Middlesex, on 21 January 1803.2,1,3 and was baptised on 10 February 1803 at St Lukes Independent Tabernacle in Finsbury.2,3,4
He declared bankruptcy in London, Middlesex, on 21 March 1825.5
He married Kezia Ann Moir at St Mary, Bromley St Leonard in London, Middlesex, on 13 November 1825.1,6,7 He was the plaintiff in a law suit at Whitechapel Road in London, Middlesex, on 8 September 1831. He was the victim of the theft of 28 yds of cotton by John Smith (who was fined one shilling and discharged).8
He declared bankruptcy in London, Middlesex, on 25 January 1832.9
Samuel's second marriage was to Elizabeth (---?---) circa 1840 at Norwood in Surrey. This marriage (if it actually occurred) appears to be bigamous, as Samuel's first wife Kezia lived until 1890, and records herself in the 1871 census as 'deserted by her husband.10'
He was listed as a member of Robert Forsaith's household in the 1841 census at 10 Curtain Rd, Tower Hamlets in St Leonards Shoreditch, Middlesex.11
He left England, and based on the contents of New Zealand newspapers of the period, must have arrived in Auckland before May 1851.
He arrived in Melbourne on the Kent from the UK in January 1867.12
He subsequently left Melbourne for New Zealand on the Tararua in January 1867.13
He was widowed at age 75 on the death of his wife Elizabeth on 7 August 1878.10,14
In a letter to his nephew (John Smyth Forsaith) he notes that he has no natural children, but four adopted daughters, all married, and that his wife of 50 years had died 12 years before. This still does not identify his (second) wife, but we conclude she must have had four daughters from an earlier marriage.15
Samuel died on 1 April 1894 at McPeake residence, Pollen St in Thames at age 91.16,17,18 He was buried on 3 April 1894 at the Shortland Cemetery in Thames.19,20,21
