Emily Dunn1,2

(c 1859 - 1938)
Emily WICKS (nee DUNN)(c.1859-c.1938) c.1910
Emily Dunn was born in Ryde, Hampshire, circa 1859.1

Emily's marriage to Richard Robert Wicks, son of William Poulter Wicks and Sarah Elizabeth Buckingham, was registered between October 1879 and December 1879 in Portsea, Hampshire.1,2

She was listed in the 1881 census at Wycombe Rd in Wooburn, Buckinghamshire, with her husband Richard; they were both upholsterers with a sideline as dealers in china. Their child Harold was listed as living with them.3

She was listed in the 1891 census in Wooburn Green, Wooburn, Buckinghamshire, with her husband Richard; he was still an upholsterer. Their children Harold, Cyril, Percy and William were listed as living with them, as was his widowed mother Sarah.4

She was listed in the 1901 census at Bourne Rd in Bourne End, Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, with her husband Richard; he was still working as an upholsterer. Their children Harold, Cyril, Percy, William, Richard and Dorothy were listed as living with them.1

She was listed in the 1911 census at The Parade in Bourne End, Buckinghamshire, with her husband Richard; he was now a stationer and she was assisting in the business. The census form was filled in by Emily, as she noted her husband had been blind since he was 51. Their children Richard and Dorothy were listed as living with them.5

It is interesting to compare Richard's stated occupation in the census records with his shop-front in the 1920s. Both he and Emily claimed to be upholsterers in 1881 (with a sideline in china). The shop picture from the '20s clearly states 'Stationer' (matching the 1911 census) but there are several signs advertising Lipton's Tea and a curious extra cabinet to the right of the shop displaying chinaware.

She was widowed on the death of her husband Richard on 27 September 1933.6,7

Emily's death was registered between January 1938 and March 1938 in Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.8

William John MITCHELL (1853-1929) family - probably taken before emigration to Australia in 1884.
L-R: Jessie G F AMOR (1872-1948), Jessie MITCHELL (nee DUNSTAN, AMOR)(1852-1918), William J D MITCHELL (1875-1917) and William J MITCHELL
Jessie Dunstan was born at Bay Tree Hill in Liskeard, Cornwall, on 26 March 1852.3,4,5,6
The siblings John and Jessie were listed in the 1861 census at 132 Navy Row in Tamar, Devon, with their mother Jane Rickard Nanscawen.7

She married George Frederick Amor, son of Joseph Amor and Mary Walters, at Register Office in Stoke Damerel, Devon, on 14 January 1872. George was a seaman on HMS Cambridge, and Jessie was resident at 36 Herbert St, Morice Town.8

She was widowed at age 20 on the death of her husband George on 26 July 1872.6

Jessie's second marriage was to William John Mitchell, son of William Mitchell and Jemima Cradick, on 10 August 1874 at Hope Chapel (Baptist), Love St in Devonport, Devon. William was a seaman on HMS Indus, while Jessie was living at 25 Sleat St, Morice Town. While her age appears correct in this entry, her father is recorded as 'John Danger', Seaman RN, deceased - possibly a registrar's error?9,10,11,12

She was listed in the 1881 census at 4 Lennox Terrace in Portsea, Hampshire, with her husband William; he was an Able Seaman on HMS Malabar. The household included Jessie's daughter from her first marriage, Jessie Georgina Frances Amor. Their child William was listed as living with them.3

Jessie arrived at Sydney, New South Wales, on 12 March 1884, on board the 'Warwick' from Plymouth accompanied by her husband William John Mitchell and children William John Dunstan and Jessie Georgina Frances. He gave his occupation as 'rigger.13'

Jessie died on 10 September 1918 at 'Kia-Ora', Victoria Rd in Glebe, Sydney, New South Wales, at age 66 of senile heart disease. The informant was her husband William.14,15,16,17 She was buried on 11 September 1918 at the Waverley Cemetery in Bronte.18,19

John Dunstan1

(1820 - c 1856)
Father*John Dunstan2 b. 1778, d. 1856
Mother*Jane Kelly2 b. c 1780, d. 1869
John Dunstan was born in St Mellion, Cornwall, on 20 January 1820.3,4,5
He was listed in the 1841 census in St Mellion, Cornwall, with his parents, John Dunstan and Jane Kelly, with his siblings Elizabeth and Charlotte, also two other DUNSTAN children (also Elizabeth and Charlotte) and John and Thomas RICKARD, apprentices.2

John's marriage to Jane Rickard Nanscawen, daughter of Thomas Hodge Wymond Nanscawen and Susanna Rickard, was registered between April 1841 and June 1841 in East Stonehouse, Devon.6,7
He served in the Royal Navy from 13 September 1844 until 17 Dec 1844 on HMS Waterwitch, and also on HMS Firebrand from 21 Sep 1844 until 17 Jun 1848, on both ships being employed as a blacksmith. We assume this was probably during refit work and he may not have actually been at sea.5

He was listed in the 1851 census as Head of Family in St Mellion, Cornwall, with his wife Jane; he was a blacksmith. Their children John and Elizabeth were listed as living with them.4

He enlisted in the Royal Navy on a 10-yr commission (height 5' 6", grey eyes, brown hair, fair complexion) on 1 July 1853. However, his record shows he had joined HMS Vulture as early as Nov 1852 as a Leading Stoker. The Vulture was one of three 6-gun, steam-powered Cyclops-class second-class paddle frigates built for the Royal Navy in the 1840s and played a minor role in the Crimean War in 1854-55. In Aug 1855 she ran aground off Hanko Head, Finland, was severely damaged and sent back to England for repairs. John's record states that after 26 Dec 1855 he was 'slated to home leave' and then 'Drowned' (no date given).5,8

John died circa January 1856 in England if we interpret his RN service record correctly.9,5

Mother*Jane Rickard Nanscawen1 b. c 1822
John Dunstan was born in St Mellion, Cornwall, on 14 February 1850.1,2,3 He was baptised in St Mellion, Cornwall, on 3 March 1850.4
The siblings John and Elizabeth were listed in the 1851 census in St Mellion, Cornwall, with their parents, John Dunstan and Jane Rickard Nanscawen.5
The siblings John and Jessie were listed in the 1861 census at 132 Navy Row in Tamar, Devon, with their mother Jane Rickard Nanscawen.1

He enlisted in the Royal Navy as a Boy, 2nd Class (height 4' 9 3/4", hair brown, eyes dark, complexion ruddy) on 17 August 1864. This preceded him commencing a 10-yr commission on turning 18 in 1868.

His application was supported by declarations of his birth from his Aunt Mary May and that he was of good character - also supported by a teacher who noted he had been withdrawn from school after the death of his mother (unfortunately this is not dated).

He first served in HMS Implacable (2nd class boy) from Feb 1864, then HMS Canopus (1st class boy), then HMS Shamrock, then in Mar 1866 joined HMS Satellite. In 1870 he joined HMS Helicon then HMS Caledonia in Aug 1872.

He served on HMS Cambridge as an AB until Jul 1874, then HMS Voyager until May 1877, a further 3 mths back on Cambridge, followed by HMS Hector.

He then served with the Coast Guard as a Boatman on Hayling Island and at Blatchington (now as a Leading Boatman).

He had signed on for a second 10-year period in 1878 (now being height 5' 8" in height, hair dark brown, eyes hazel, complexion dark, with a head wound and a tear in the left leg). This was followed by a short engagement on HMS Northampton, then HMS Invincible from Nov 1886. His engagement continued until he was pensioned off from HMS President (the London shore base of the RN) in Oct 1888 (now as Chief Petty Officer).3
